State report · Kuala Lumpur
Only in KL do offices outnumber car businesses: 5,155 to 3,994 (September 2026)
A third of the software companies in HiGo's listings are in KL. It has less than half Selangor's merchant count, yet more Japanese restaurants and bars. Homestays? Just 198.

In Kuala Lumpur, companies and professional firms outnumber workshops, car washes and parts shops by 1,161. Of Malaysia's 13 states and 3 federal territories, KL is the only place where that's true.
As of 14 September 2026, HiGo lists 50,249 merchants in Kuala Lumpur, 10.4% of the 482,074 across Malaysia. Sorted by industry, food & dining (8,901, or 17.7%) and retail (7,952, or 15.8%) lead the way. Offices and business services come next.
Only in KL do offices come before cars
In HiGo's listings, Kuala Lumpur has 5,155 merchants in offices & business (10.3%) and 3,994 in automotive & transport (7.9%). The first group covers company offices, software firms, consultants and lawyers. The second covers workshops, car washes, parts shops and dealers, and it counts bus stops too. Leave out KL's 434 bus stops and the gap gets even wider.
Selangor next door is the other way round: 11,713 automotive listings (10.2%) against 9,079 in offices & business (7.9%). So is Malaysia as a whole, with 42,993 automotive against 28,676 offices. Every other state and territory has more automotive than offices. Labuan comes closest, with 73 offices to 74 automotive.
Put another way: for every 100 automotive merchants, KL has 129 in offices & business. Everywhere else, the figure is under 100.
A tenth of Malaysia's merchants, a third of its software companies
KL has 10.4% of Malaysia's merchants but 18.0% of its office and business listings (5,155 of 28,676). In some categories, KL's share is far higher:
- Software companies: 305 of 913 nationwide, or 33.4%
- Management consultants: 187 of 620, or 30.2%
- Marketing agencies: 121 of 451, or 26.8%
- Lawyers: 229 of 939, or 24.4%
Among categories with at least 300 merchants nationwide, software companies top the list for KL's share.
Less than half Selangor's count, yet more Japanese restaurants and bars
Selangor has 115,092 merchants in our listings, 2.3 times as many as KL. Even so, KL has more in a handful of categories: Japanese restaurants (178 to 148), bars (234 to 159), condominium complexes (296 to 242) and watch shops (101 to 79). Lawyers are level, at 229 each.
So if you're after Japanese food or somewhere for a drink after work, KL offers more choice in our listings than a neighbour with more than twice as many businesses overall. What the counts can't tell us is who the customers are, or why these categories cluster in KL.
The capital and Selangor have the smallest share of places to stay
KL has 1,744 merchants in stays & travel, just 3.5%, against 6.7% for Malaysia as a whole. Selangor is also about 3.5%, and the two share the lowest spot among the states and territories. Terengganu is the highest, at 14.9%.
Most of the gap is in homestays. If KL had its usual one-tenth share, it would have over a thousand; it has 198, out of 11,082 nationwide. Hotels are close to KL's overall share: 526 of the 5,499 nationwide, or 9.6%.
What it means for you
- Need a software house, marketing agency, management consultant or lawyer? Between a quarter and a third of those in HiGo's listings are in KL. If you live in another state, adding KL to your search makes the list a lot longer.
- Thinking of opening a car-related business in KL? Automotive & transport is only 7.9% of the city's listings, below Selangor's 10.2% and 8.9% nationally. A smaller share doesn't mean fewer rivals, though, and the data says nothing about demand, so walk the area yourself before you pick a spot.
- Staying a night in the city? Our listings have only 198 homestays against 526 hotels, so most of your choices will be hotels.
- In the mood for Japanese after work? KL has 178 Japanese restaurants in our listings. The two below are highly rated, with plenty of reviews and real photos.

Of the 178 Japanese restaurants in our Kuala Lumpur listings, 20 are rated 4.7 or better with at least 500 reviews. These two have real photos, and each is in a different part of the city:
