A 4.5 rating is what most places in Perlis have. In Kuala Lumpur and Sarawak, fewer than half get there.

Of the eateries in HiGo's listings, 43.6% are rated 4.5 or above. Perlis is on 55.0%, the only one of the 13 states and 3 federal territories to go above half.

Kedah and Terengganu are right on the line, both just under half

Kedah is on 50.0% and Terengganu 49.8%. At the bottom end, Sarawak is lowest at 37.8%.

How close is Kedah? Of its 4,711 rated places, 2,355 make the mark — one more and it would be past half.

Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Johor are, near enough, the national average

Selangor has the most places to eat in the listings, followed by Johor and Kuala Lumpur. Between them the three account for 47.6% of all rated places in the country, so the national figure mostly follows their level.

Selangor is on 43.4%, Kuala Lumpur 43.3% and Johor 42.0%. The gap only really shows in the top five: Perlis, Kedah, Terengganu, Kelantan and Penang.

Coffee and tea: the same four states lead again

Coffee and tea is a separate category, covering cafes, coffee shops, bubble tea and juice bars. Its figure is higher overall, at 50.9% nationwide.

The same four lead, though in a different order: Perlis (58.8%) and Terengganu (58.6%) at the top. Sarawak is last in both categories, on 36.2% for coffee and tea.

What this means for you

  • Compare a place's rating with others in the same state, not with the rest of the country. 4.5 is ordinary in Perlis and Kedah, while in Sarawak fewer than four in every ten places reach it.
  • Where high ratings are common, a 4.5 doesn't tell one place from another. Check how many reviews there are, and read what people wrote.
