Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, Puchong and most of Shah Alam (the state capital) all fall within one administrative district: Petaling. Don't confuse it with PJ; the district takes in far more than the city.

As of 14 September 2026, HiGo's listings had 41,128 merchants in Petaling district, 7,692 more than in the whole state of Penang (33,436).

One district, more businesses than eleven states

Petaling district against the states and territories with the most merchants in our listings (14 September 2026)
  • Johor62,738
  • Kuala Lumpur (federal territory)50,249
  • Petaling (district)41,128
  • Perak35,084
  • Penang33,436
  • Sabah29,524

Selangor as a whole has 115,092; Petaling is one of its districts, so Selangor isn't shown. Bar length is proportional to the count.

Apart from Selangor itself (115,092), only Johor and Kuala Lumpur have more merchants in HiGo's listings than Petaling district. The other eleven states, plus Putrajaya and Labuan, all have fewer, and that includes big states such as Perak, Sabah and Sarawak.

This one district accounts for 35.7% of Selangor's merchants. Nationally, it's 8.5% of the 482,074 we list.

Half of Selangor's office-based businesses are here

Food and retail take the top two places in Petaling district, as they do across the state. Third place is where Petaling parts company with the rest of Selangor: offices and business services, with 4,629 merchants. That group covers corporate offices, software companies, consultants, law firms, and advertising and marketing agencies. For Selangor as a whole, third place goes to automotive (11,713).

Selangor has 9,079 merchants in offices and business services, and 51.0% of them are in Petaling district. Software companies are even more concentrated: 242 of the state's 362, or 66.9%. Sepang, home to Cyberjaya, is a distant second with 55.

Offices and business services make up 11.3% of all merchants in Petaling district, a higher share than in Kuala Lumpur (5,155 of 50,249, or 10.3%). For Selangor as a whole, the figure is 7.9%.

Food and retail are neck and neck, until you strip out closures

Food and dining has 6,205 merchants and retail has 6,167. On paper, it's a dead heat.

Both figures include places marked permanently closed: 1,228 in food and 796 in retail. Count only the ones not marked permanently closed and food has 4,977 against retail's 5,371, which puts retail 394 ahead.

Close to one in four cafes is marked permanently closed

Petaling district has 1,319 cafes, coffee shops and bubble tea places, which we count as their own group, separate from food and dining. Of those, 316, or 24.0%, are marked permanently closed, the highest rate of our 17 industry groups. Food and dining is at 19.8%. Offices and business services sit at just 2.5% (114 of 4,629).
