The cafes and coffee shops Malaysians walk into every day carry a higher share of "permanently closed" markers in HiGo's listings than automotive and transport, clinics and healthcare, or education and training.

As of 3 October 2026, HiGo listed 481,933 merchants in Malaysia. Of those, 31,886 are marked permanently closed: 6.62%.

Coffee and tea is at 13.49%, the highest of the 17 industry groups and 2.04 times the overall figure

Coffee and tea has 17,519 listings, 2,363 of them marked permanently closed: 13.49%. That puts it at the top of the 17 industry groups, 2.04 times the overall 6.62%. Food and dining follows at 11.93%, then leisure and entertainment at 9.43%.

At the other end are property and housing at 1.31%, construction and renovation at 2.24% and offices and business at 2.48%. From top to bottom, that's a 10.3-fold gap.

Each bar shows a group's listings marked permanently closed as a share of all that group's listings, closed ones included. Each merchant counts in one industry group only. All 17 groups are shown; bar lengths are proportional.

Inside coffee and tea: cafes at 16.07%, coffee shops at 9.68%

Even inside one group, two categories can sit this far apart. Cafes have 8,951 listings, 1,438 of them marked permanently closed: 16.07%. Coffee shops have 6,705 listings, 649 of them marked: 9.68%. The cafe share is 1.66 times the coffee shop share.

This compares two categories in the listings, not two kinds of business. The categories come from Google and the boundaries aren't clean: outlets of the same brand land in different categories, and plenty of bubble tea chain outlets sit under cafes.

A smaller denominator in the same group: of the 529 listings filed under bubble tea store, 129 are marked permanently closed, or 24.39%. Those 529 are only the entries filed under that one category, not every shop in Malaysia selling bubble tea. Treat 24.39% as a detail about a small set of listings.

Food shows the same pattern: restaurants at 12.27%, hawker stalls at 7.72%

Restaurants have 31,824 listings, 3,906 of them marked permanently closed: 12.27%. Hawker stalls have 3,780 listings, 292 of them marked: 7.72%. The restaurant share is 1.59 times the hawker stall share.

In between sit food courts, with 239 of 2,472 listings at 9.67%, and bakeries, with 370 of 4,071 at 9.09%. Outside food and drink, clothing stores are in the same band: 525 of 5,110 listings, or 10.27%.

The share marked permanently closed is highest in Kuala Lumpur (11.43%) and Putrajaya (11.34%), lowest in Kelantan (4.15%)

By place, the share of listings marked permanently closed runs across the 16 states and federal territories: Kuala Lumpur (11.43%) and Putrajaya (11.34%) come top and Kelantan (4.15%) bottom — 2.75 times apart. Selangor is at 7.64%, Penang at 6.67% and Johor at 6.05%, all around the overall 6.62%.

What to do with this

  • These figures answer one question: what share of a group's HiGo listings carries a permanently closed marker. They do not measure how an industry is doing, and they are not a count of shops that stopped trading in any single year.
  • Listings build up year after year. When a shop stops trading, its entry stays on record, so lines of business where outlets open and change hands quickly build up more closed entries and show a higher share.
  • There are no opening dates on record, so these figures can't say how long a shop traded before it stopped or which year it stopped, and they say nothing about any individual shop.
  • Before you head out, check on the map whether the shop is still open.
  • The latest listing counts by state and by industry are on HiGo's Malaysia page.

All four are among the 17,519 coffee and tea listings. None is marked permanently closed, all are rated 4.7 or better with 500 reviews or more, and each has a checked real photo on record. They are spread across three states and Kuala Lumpur. Ratings and review counts were last checked on 4 September 2026.

Ratings and review counts come from Google's public data, as recorded by HiGo on 4 September 2026. They are not a HiGo ranking or recommendation.

Data: HiGo merchant listings, checked 3 October 2026. Each share here is a group's listings marked permanently closed, as a proportion of all that group's listings, closed ones included. Our listings don't cover every business in Malaysia. The 17 industry groups come to 480,604 listings and the 16 states and federal territories to 478,916, both fewer than 481,933: another 1,329 have no industry group on record and 3,017 have no state on record. The parts don't add up to the whole. Every share above is still worked out from its own group's own totals. HiGo assigns each merchant one industry group, based on its category. Ratings and review counts are public Google data, not HiGo scores.
