Think of factories in Malaysia, and Johor or Penang may be the first names that come to mind. In HiGo's listings, those two states have 5,096 industrial and manufacturing businesses between them (Johor 3,226, Penang 1,870). Selangor alone has 6,968.

As of 14 September 2026, HiGo listed 115,092 merchants in Selangor, 23.9% of the 482,074 across Malaysia: almost one in four.

It isn't just size: by share, Selangor is the most industrial of the 13 states

Selangor is big to begin with. It has 2,105 more merchants than the next two, Johor (62,738) and Kuala Lumpur (50,249), put together. But its lead in industry goes beyond size. Industrial firms make up 6.1% of Selangor's merchants, against 5.6% in Penang and 5.1% in Johor: the highest of Malaysia's 13 states. Among the federal territories, Labuan, with far fewer merchants, is higher.

The group covers factories, warehouses, manufacturers and suppliers. Of the 21,074 listed nationwide, 33.1% are in Selangor, close to one in three. Construction and renovation (31.3%) and offices and business (31.7%) follow the same pattern. Like manufacturing, both are well above Selangor's 23.9% share of merchants overall.

Of the 17 industry groups, the three where Selangor's share is highest and the one where it's lowest. 'All merchants' is there for comparison.

Within the state, industry is most concentrated in Klang district: 1,460 industrial firms, 8.6% of all its merchants. Petaling district has the most by number, 2,345. The district takes in not just Petaling Jaya but also Subang Jaya and part of Shah Alam.

Stays and travel go the other way, at 3.5% of Selangor's merchants

Stays and travel covers hotels, homestays and holiday homes, plus attractions and travel agents. Of the 17 industry groups, it's the one where Selangor's share of the national total is lowest: just 12.4% of Malaysia's 32,385 (see the chart above).

Within Selangor, stays and travel make up 3.5% of merchants, roughly half the 6.7% for Malaysia as a whole. Kuala Lumpur is at 3.5% too.

Except in Sabak Bernam, where more than one in eight is in stays and travel

Sabak Bernam district, at the state's northern tip, has 1,757 merchants, and 223 of them (12.7%) are in stays and travel. That's more than three times the state's 3.5%, and the highest of the nine districts. Here it's the third-biggest group, after food and shopping. The 223 include 116 homestays and 36 hotels, and 89 have a Sekinchan address.

Hulu Selangor district comes second, at 8.5%. The lowest is Petaling district, even though it has the most stays-and-travel listings: its 846 are only 2.1% of the district's merchants.

In seven of the nine districts, cars come third

Food and dining (18,233) and retail (17,585) lead in Selangor. Third is automotive and transport, with 11,713 merchants: workshops, car washes, parts shops and dealers, plus bus stops and transport services.

It's third in seven of the nine districts as well, with the highest share in Gombak district (12.9%), followed by Klang district (11.9%). In the other two, third place goes to stays and travel in Sabak Bernam, and to offices and business in Petaling. We wrote about Petaling district a few days ago.
