Perak has the most Hindu temples in HiGo's listings: 145
For Indian food, nearly half the places are in Selangor and KL; and mamak stalls are rated on their own level, separate from Indian restaurants.

If you're looking for a Hindu temple and a proper Indian meal, you won't find them in the same places on the map.
On 30 October 2026, HiGo lists 681 Hindu temples and 830 Indian restaurants in Malaysia.
Six states have more temples than Kuala Lumpur, whose 37 rank seventh
Perak has 145 and Selangor 132. Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Penang and Kedah also have more than Kuala Lumpur.
Food is the other way round: nearly half the Indian restaurants are in Selangor and KL
Of 830 Indian restaurants, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur together hold 47.3%, against 24.8% of the 681 temples. The restaurants cluster in those two; the temples are spread across Perak, Johor, Negeri Sembilan and Penang.
Indian restaurants sit at a median 4.2, mamak stalls at 3.8: each category has its own level
The 816 Indian restaurants with a rating have a median of 4.2, and the 574 mamak stalls with a rating have a median of 3.8.
Among places with 100 reviews or more, 21.0% of Indian restaurants are rated 4.5 or above, against 4.1% of mamak stalls. Places with plenty of reviews make up a much larger share of the mamak listings than of the Indian ones, so the two percentages are not comparing like with like. Each category has its own level, so don't judge one by the other.
What these numbers mean for you
- You don't have to stick to Selangor and KL to find a temple: Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Penang all have more listings than Kuala Lumpur. Check the place's status on the map before you go.
- Search "Indian restaurant" and "mamak stall" separately. They are two separate categories in the listings, and each place appears in only one.
- When comparing ratings, stay within one category, and use only places with 100 reviews or more.
