Malaysian merchant cover images, October 2026: only 4.60% of 450,047 listings have a real photograph, 60.84% show Google Street View
The group that gets misread is the third one: for 34.55% of listings, the cover image link no longer loads. That means the image address on record no longer returns a picture — not that the shop stopped trading. The 32,027 listings marked permanently closed are not part of this count at all.

On the Malaysian merchant listings in HiGo's records, the image picked as the cover is far more often a Street View capture than a real photograph.
As of 13 October 2026, HiGo's records hold 450,047 Malaysian merchant listings that are not marked permanently closed — the in-scope listings this piece is about. They fall into three cover-image groups: 20,703 have a real photograph as the cover image, or 4.60%; 273,831 show a Google Street View capture, or 60.84%; and for 155,513, or 34.55%, the cover image link no longer loads. The three groups add up to 450,047 exactly.
Only 20,703 listings have a real photograph as the cover image: 4.60%, or roughly one in every 21.7
Of those 450,047 in-scope listings, 20,703 have a real photograph as the cover image: 4.60%, or roughly one in every 21.7 listings.
Those 20,703 split two ways: 7,205 have already been rechecked, 13,498 have not — 20,703 in all.
"A real photograph" means one thing here and nothing more: the cover image is neither a Street View capture nor a link that no longer loads. There is no photographer and no capture date on record, so these figures cannot say who took it, or when it was taken.
Street View is the largest group: 273,831 listings, 60.84%, 13.23 times the real-photograph count
The largest of the three groups is Google Street View: 273,831 listings, or 60.84%. That is 13.23 times the 20,703 listings with a real photograph.
Across the 16 states and federal territories, the Street View share stays within a narrow band: Melaka is highest at 63.59% and Putrajaya lowest at 56.24%, with Sabah the next lowest at 56.51%. There is no Street View capture year on record.
The third group is cover image links that no longer load: 155,513 listings, 34.55%, highest in Sabah at 39.32% and lowest in Melaka at 31.74%
The third group is the listings whose cover image link on record no longer returns a picture: 155,513 listings, or 34.55%. Across the 16 states and federal territories, Sabah is highest at 39.32%, followed by Putrajaya at 38.79%, Pahang at 38.13% and Sarawak at 37.12%. Melaka is lowest at 31.74%: Sabah's share is 1.24 times Melaka's.
Sabah, the longest bar in the chart below, has 27,990 in-scope listings. Selangor, which has the most in-scope listings at 106,264, sits at 33.40%, close to Kuala Lumpur at 33.44% and Negeri Sembilan at 33.16%.
This group says the image link no longer returns a picture. It does not say the shop stopped trading: the 32,027 listings marked permanently closed were never part of this piece's 450,047. A listing marked permanently closed carries that marking and nothing else — no reason is on record.
Cover images aren't the only gap: 30.68% of these listings have no phone number on record, 78.61% no website
Within the same 450,047 listings, 138,054 have no phone number on record, or 30.68%. A website is on record for 96,249, or 21.39% — which leaves 353,798 without one, or 78.61%.
The two measures do not peak in the same places. For listings with no phone number on record, Labuan (1,011 in-scope listings) is highest at 41.74% and Kuala Lumpur lowest at 23.08%: Labuan's share is 1.81 times Kuala Lumpur's. For listings with a website on record, Putrajaya is highest at 32.85% and Kelantan lowest at 13.36%, so Putrajaya's share is 2.46 times Kelantan's; Kuala Lumpur, at 30.97%, is 2.32 times Kelantan's. Putrajaya (1,650 in-scope listings) was the second-highest place in the section above, at 38.79% for cover image links that no longer load, yet it has the highest share of listings with a website of all 16 states and federal territories.
What to do with this
- The cover image is not much use for sizing up a shop: only 4.60% have a real photograph, 60.84% show a Street View capture, and for 34.55% the link no longer loads.
- When you do see a Street View capture, do not take it as a reliable picture of the shopfront: there is no Street View capture year on record.
- Sabah at 39.32%, Putrajaya at 38.79%, Pahang at 38.13% and Sarawak at 37.12% sit well above Melaka at 31.74% for cover image links that no longer load. The cover image is of even less help in those places, so lean on the trading status on the map.
- If you like to call ahead, do not count on the phone number or the website being there: of these 450,047 listings, 30.68% have no phone number on record and 78.61% no website. To check whether a shop is still open, look at its trading status on the map before you head out.

Data: HiGo merchant listings, checked 13 October 2026. Each share here is that cover-image group's listings as a proportion of in-scope listings, in-scope being the 450,047 entries not marked permanently closed on record; all listings, including the 32,027 marked permanently closed, come to 482,074. Our listings do not cover every business in Malaysia, and these shares cannot be used to infer anything about an individual shop. The split is which group the cover image belongs to, not whether a shop has photographs: a shop can have plenty, and these figures look only at the one picked as the cover. "A real photograph" only means the image picked as the cover is neither a Street View capture nor a link that no longer loads, with no photographer or capture date on record; "the cover image link no longer loads" means the image address on record no longer returns a picture, not that the shop stopped trading; the phone and website figures say whether those two fields are empty on record. The 16 states and federal territories come to 447,242 in-scope listings, 2,805 fewer than 450,047: those 2,805 entries have no state on record, so the parts do not add up to the whole, and every share above is still worked out from its own state's or federal territory's total. Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan are federal territories, not states. Ratings and review counts are public Google data, not HiGo scores, last checked on 4 September 2026.
