Trade report
Malaysia: 44.10% of the 159,720 merchants rated exactly 5.0 have a single review (HiGo listings, October 2026)
The more reviews, the fewer perfect scores: 73.98% of merchants with one review sit at 5.0, against 8.37% of those with 1,000 reviews or more — the first share is 8.84 times the last.

A shop shows 5.0 on the map and looks faultless. Open the reviews and there may be just one person who ever rated it.
As of 11 October 2026, HiGo's Malaysian listings cover 438,127 merchants with a rating and at least one review. Of those, 159,720 are rated exactly 5.0, or 36.46%.
159,720 merchants are rated exactly 5.0, or 36.46% of those with at least one review
HiGo lists 481,933 merchants in Malaysia, including entries marked permanently closed; 459,794 of them carry a rating. Set aside the 21,667 that have a rating but a review count of zero, and 438,127 are left, each with a rating and at least one review. Every share below that is worked out against "merchants with reviews" uses those 438,127; the later sections that use their own totals say so where they do.
A rating of exactly 5.0 accounts for 159,720 of them, or 36.46% — more than a third of all merchants with reviews sit right at the top of the scale.
Google's score is the average of all ratings published for a place, on a scale of one to five stars (Google's own explanation). So where a shop has only one review, whatever that one person gave is what the shop shows — give it five stars and it sits at 5.0.
Of the 5.0 ratings, 44.10% rest on one review and 77.13% on fewer than five
Every share in this section is worked out from the 159,720 merchants rated 5.0. Of those, 70,430 have a single review, or 44.10%. Widen the net to fewer than five reviews and the figure is 123,188, or 77.13%.
At the other end of the scale the numbers thin out: 6,762 of them have 50 reviews or more, or 4.23%; 4,290 have 100 reviews or more, or 2.69%; and only 422 have 1,000 reviews or more, or 0.26%.
So "5.0" on its own tells you nothing about how many people said so. Read the review count before the score: a 5.0 held up by one review and a 5.0 held up by 1,000 reviews or more are not the same thing.
Shops with one review are at 5.0 73.98% of the time; with 1,000 reviews or more, 8.37%
Sort the same merchants into seven bands by review count, then set each band's merchants rated exactly 5.0 against the band's total. Of the 95,202 merchants with one review, 70,430 are at 5.0, or 73.98%. In the 2–4 band it is 52,758 of 109,063, or 48.37%; at 5–9, 16,352 of 65,912, or 24.81%; at 10–49, 13,418 of 97,240, or 13.80%.
From 50 reviews or more the three bands settle low and sit close together: 9.89% at 50–99, 9.51% at 100–999, 8.37% at 1,000 or more — still edging down, but by far smaller steps than earlier on. The share in the one-review band is 8.84 times the share in the 1,000-or-more band.
The seven bands add up to all 438,127 merchants, 159,720 of them at 5.0. These figures say what share of each band sits at a perfect score; they say nothing about which band's shops are better run. For that, read the reviews themselves.
By industry: perfect scores are thinnest in government and public services, where 91.92% rest on one to four reviews, and thickest in clinics, at 52.04%
Split the perfect scores by industry group and the difference is in how many rest on one to four reviews. The thinnest base is government and public services: 2,740 of its 2,981 merchants rated 5.0, or 91.92%, rest on one to four reviews. The thickest is clinics and healthcare, at 2,593 of 4,983, or 52.04% — the lowest share of the 17 industry groups, and government and public services is 1.77 times that share.
The trades you deal with day to day sit in between: food and dining 80.18%, retail 78.46%, automotive and transport 72.90%, beauty and wellness 61.57%.
This section compares how thin the review counts behind perfect scores are, not how well a trade is run. Each share is worked out against that group's own count of merchants rated 5.0.
What to do with this
- Read the review count before the score: 44.10% of merchants rated 5.0 have a single review, and 77.13% have fewer than five.
- Merchants with plenty of reviews that still sit at exactly 5.0 are rare: just 422 in Malaysia have 1,000 reviews or more and are still rated exactly 5.0 — 422 out of the 5,040 merchants in that band.
- A rough rule of thumb: a 5.0 on fewer than ten reviews only tells you few people have rated it; 6,762 merchants across Malaysia hold a 5.0 on 50 reviews or more.
- When you weigh up two shops, compare shops with similar review counts.
- These figures describe how the listings are spread; they say nothing about whether any one shop is good. Read the reviews, and check that the shop is still open before you head over.
- The latest listing counts by state and by industry are on HiGo's Malaysia page.

Data: HiGo merchant listings, checked 11 October 2026. A perfect 5.0 here means a merchant whose rating on record is exactly 5.0 with at least one review; every share is worked out against the 438,127 merchants that have a rating and at least one review. A further 21,667 have a rating but a review count of zero and are left out. Ratings on record are full-precision averages, not the rounded figure shown on Google: another 117 merchants average between 4.95 and 5.0 and also show as 5.0 on Google, and the 159,720 here do not include those 117. Our listings don't cover every business in Malaysia. The 17 industry groups come to 159,325 merchants rated 5.0, which is 395 fewer than 159,720: those 395 have no industry group on record, and every share above is worked out from each group's own totals. HiGo assigns each merchant one industry group, based on its category. Ratings and review counts are public Google data, not HiGo scores.
